Oh Byung-in, the CEO of Haechang Brewery, left his life in Seoul and returned to the countryside. Now, he brews alcohol with his loving family in a secluded country house with a beautiful garden. "If you brew alcohol cheaply and poorly, you will receive cheap and poor treatment." Haechang Brewery's makgeolli, brewed with the pride and self-esteem of Haenam rice, water, and sea breeze, is packed with flavor.

A brewery with a beautiful garden

The living quarters and garden of Haechang Brewery were built and developed in 1927 by "Shibada Hikohei," who was born in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, moved to Gangjin, and settled in Haenam. After liberation, Jang Nam-mun, the eldest son of the founder of Haenam Samhwa Elementary School, lived there. It is believed that he obtained the brewery license in 1961. After that, Hwang Ui-kwon, who had been engaged in brewing, took over Haechang Brewery and spent over 30 years brewing alcohol. Since 2008, Oh Byung-in and Park Ria, a married couple, have been living and operating the brewery. A "jujojang" (주조장) is a place where alcohol is brewed, and a "yangjojang" (양조장) is a place where alcohol, soy sauce, or vinegar is brewed. When you look at the names of the companies that have obtained alcohol licenses, you can see that "yangjojang" is overwhelmingly used in regions outside of Jeolla Province. In Jeolla Province, the name "yangjojang" is rarely seen, and most companies use the name "jujojang." The reason why Haechang Brewery is called Haechang "Jujojang" and not Haechang "Yangjojang" is because it reflects that local sentiment.
